Joints Are Not Static

The Body’s Innate Ability to Heal Itself

The body is amazing in that it is constantly working.  You sleep, it works.  It is constantly at work repairing and healing itself from the damage of each day.  I am reminded of this all summer as my two older daughters are running around on the sidewalks and take the inevitable spill.  A layer of their skin is damaged, but within a week you really wouldn’t know that they fell.

Stuck with What We Have?

The healing power of the body is a nice concept for a 4 year old’s skinned knee, but what about for an adults knee joint.  Does your body create a layer of joint material at birth and then you’re are stuck with it throughout your life?  Is it kind of like a pencil eraser and once we’ve worn it down that’s it, its gone?

The Body’s Maintenance Men

Well it is not that simple.  While it may not turnover as fast as your skin, the material that covers your joint is in constant turnover.  Certain cells work to break down old material while others are are working hard to make new joint material.  Even though damage is done at times, your body is hard at work to repair itself.

Feed, Water, and Watch It Grow

Just like it is important to dress any daughter’s knee to make sure it heals, we should continually supply our bodies what it needs to make new and healthy joint materials.
