Is Exercise Beneficial? Not an Easy Answer

Common sense, health education, personal bias, and information from health practitioners all chime in to answer one question for us- Is exercise beneficial for our joints?  Our pain memories shield us from doing anything to harm our joints.  For some the thought of exercise is associated with pain.  We’ve even heard someone say along the way, “No pain, no gain”.

Balancing Instincts and Evidence

If our instincts are shouting at us to avoid physical activity how do we balance our feelings with the fact that exericise can be beneficial for joint health.  Every credible health organization is recommending some form of exercise for those suffering with most joint issues.  Exercise has been shown in studies to increase joint strength and flexibility.  It has also been shown to decrease joint pain.

How Do I Start

So, if we want to decrease joint pain should we just go right out and start pounding the pavement?  While exercise can have many benefits for joints those with joint pain, especially arthritis pain, should be cautious about the intensity and types of workouts you choose.  While most exercises can be done safetly by those with joint issues it is always best to check with your doctor or physical therapist before starting any workout program.
